Step Up to Leadership: Join the GCEA Board!

Ready to Make an Impact?

Preparation is the key to success, and it is the difference between success and failure. But the buck stops with YOU! The same thought-process is true for businesses and organizations. For a great organization like the Georgia Continuing Education Association to operate at a level that is expected, preparation is the key to success. Hours and hours of work are invested into the organization every month by active members and dedicated officers in preparation for your success.

All too often, people join organizations or serve on a board as another entry to place on a resumé. There is no thought of what the organization needs or how the organization might benefit from the involvement of all members. However, for an organization to remain strong, vibrant, and relevant, it takes a team of members and officers committed to the success of the organization. Membership without responsibility does not benefit anyone. An entry on your resumé without the experience of helping grow something successful, is just words on paper. Two years ago, I chose to join GCEA and to become an active Member at Large. Again, I will say the buck stops with YOU and you’ll never regret making a decision to be the type leader your organization treasures.

Here are three easy steps to organizational SUCCESS – three steps so
that you to be able to find success as a member and as a leader! When joining an organization that will look great on your resumé and propel you toward your goals, you need to plan, prepare, and promote!

Plan: There are several key questions to ask as you begin the planning process of joining an organization. The answers to these questions will lead you to results that will satisfy everything you need from an organization.

  • Who are the members and officers (education, special interests, mission, values, contributions)?
  • What basic purpose will you hope to achieve from this organization?
  • Will this organization satisfy your long-term professional goals?
  • Do you have time in your schedule to commit to attending monthly meetings and serving on a committee?
  • How often does the organization meet and how much time is required of you as a member? How much time is required of you as an officer?
  • What is the focus of regular monthly meetings?
  • What are the yearly dues?
  • Does this organization sponsor a yearly conference and what is the price for attending?
  • Do you need to conduct research to learn more about the organization?

These may seem like endless questions but knowing these answers will help you develop a plan to get involved.  Are you ready for the next step?

Prepare: Even the simplest things need to be considered as you prepare for joining an organization. And, yes, there are still more questions:

  • What can YOU bring to the table as a new member?
  • Are you willing to take on an officer role within the organization?
  • What committees need help that you can supply?

Promote: Now, you are almost ready for the easiest part! Because you have taken the time to plan and prepare, all you need to do at this point is to get excited about your new organization. There will be no failing because you are just the person to make big things happen!
